Under 9’s
The Under 9’s first trained together as a 6-a-side squad in September 2015. A number of the boys were brought through our Thursday Night Academy, then were invited straight to our EDP squad managed by coach Ash. It’s nice to see the ladder of development from first kicks, to Thursdays, leading to an invitation to EDP.
Boys who attended Thursdays were:
Jared Bailey, Max Holmes, Maxwell Williamson, Joe Cotton, Jack Clements, Connor Bull, Finley Thorpe, Jack Cassar, Charlie Warner and Owen Rylatt.
Since starting, Jared Bailey and Owen Rylatt have both signed for Lincoln City Academy, with a number of the lads been offered trials after successful fixtures. As heartbreaking as it is to see the boys leave after coaching them for a number of years, it’s good to see they’re continuing their footballing pathway.
My philosophy as a coach for the Under 9’s (Ash), is to get the boys to play out from the back with a real quick tempo, every player knows there role. This includes needing a goalkeeper with great footwork and good distribution. Training over the past 3 months or so has included a lot of shadow play for me to drill down the shape and positioning of the team. In academy games we play 8 a side matches playing a 2-1-3-1 formation.
I’m really happy with my current squad and the rate that they are developing at as a team.

Favourite performance?
As a coach these boys have treated me to some fantastic displays over the past year or so. Beating Lincoln City and Scunthorpe being a couple of them but I’ve got to pick to different performances.
Derby County Academy @ The Pilgrim Cup (Quarter Finals)- 1-1 AET, losing 2-1 on Penalties, this was when I knew I had a special team drawing with a category 1 Academy team in normal time. The intensity in this game is something, I’ve never seen in Academy football before, the tempo was so quick and the quality was so high. Jared Bailey with the performance of the tournament in net for my 9’s.
Sheffield Wednesday Away – 2-1 to Wednesday after 80 minutes of football, the standard of football played by both teams in this game was something special. Each and every boy played their hearts out and looked like academy players. Vice Captain Max Holmes with an outstanding performance.
Lincoln City (W), Qualitas (D), Kings Lynn Elite (D), 780 Coaching (W), Derby County (L AET), Sheffield Wednesday (L), Boston United Academy (W), Scunthorpe United (W) & Nottingham Forest (W).
Future games: Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, St Neots.
